Dr. Ivan Madjarov

Dr. Ivan Madjarov was elected chairman of the professional organization of the 68th regular reporting and election fair of the BMA in June 2018.
Prior to heading the Bulgarian Medical Association, he was the manager of the Pulmed Hospital in Plovdiv and was the chairman of the board of the Bulgarian Hospital Association.
From 2013 to 2014 he was the director of RHIF Plovdiv.
From 2008 to 2013 he was the manager of Parvomay Hospital EOOD. From 1994 to 2008 he was an intern in the ENT department at the Plovdiv Hospital in Plovdiv.
Dr. Ivan Madjarov graduated from the Medical University - Plovdiv. He has a degree in "Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases" and a Master's degree in Health Management.

Anna Kozieł is a Senior Health Specialist in the Health, Nutrition and Population Global Practice at the World Bank, based in Brussels.

She has over twenty years of experience working with country governments in Europe and Asia, finding innovative solutions to health sector challenges on a variety of topics, such as service delivery, integrated care, hospital reform, human capital development, tobacco control, and knowledge management. Working extensively with senior policy makers, she supports the government in the design and implementation of a key reform at the intersection of patient needs, modern technologies, design principles and data management systems.

Prior to joining the Bank, Anna worked at the World Health Organization, Ministry of Health as well as in the private sector.

Iliana Paunova is the Executive Director of the Bulgarian Organization for Verification of Medicines (BOVL). The association was established in April 2016 by the five organizations representing stakeholders in the implementation of Directive 2011/62 / EU in Bulgaria.
Prior to that, as Director of GlaxoSmithKline for Bulgaria and the Adriatic, she worked for the development of the pharmaceutical industry and the introduction of innovative projects and investments in our country and the region. She has been Chair and Vice President of the Association of Research Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (ARPharM) several times.
In 2020, Iliana Paunova was invited by the European Organization for the Verification of Medicinal Products (EMVO) to participate in the working group for the implementation of the Directive against falsified medicines for medicines and vaccines for COVID-19 in the Member States of the European Economic Area.
She graduated in Informatics at the University of National and World Economy and specialized in Finance, Marketing and Management at INSEAD, Henley Business School, MIT Sloan School of Management and others.

Dr. David N. Bernstein is an orthopaedic surgery resident physician in the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program (HCORP) based out of Massachusetts General Hospital and senior researcher in value-based health care at Harvard Business School, where he works alongside Professors Michael E. Porter and Robert (Bob) S. Kaplan on health care transformation initiatives aimed at addressing health delivery system challenges in the United States and globally. In addition, he has taken on a number of consulting roles aimed at helping to "fix" health care and improve patient health and well-being through improved alignment of incentives. He was named a Special Advisor for Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) to the Orthopaedic Surgeon-in-Chief at Boston Children’s Hospital, Clinical Advisor at the Department of Population Health Management at Mass General Brigham, Clinical Advisor in Value-Based Health Care Transformation at CapaDev (health care consulting firm based primarily in Europe and the Middle East), and Fellow of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) (formerly the Institute of Medicine).

Dr. Bernstein is a prolific health services scientist and key opinion leader. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts in top scientific journals, co-authored a variety of opinion pieces and commentary articles in popular mainstream media outlets (Harvard Business Review (HBR), Fox News, The Boston Globe, STAT, The Hill, New York Daily News, among others), written a number of policy "white papers" for some of the most well-respected "think tanks" in Washington, DC on health care price transparency, received numerous prestigious accolades for his scholarly activity, and spoken globally on addressing health care system challenges. Additionally, he has also contributed to reports produced for the World Economic Forum (WEF) on health care transformation. He is the only resident to ever present "Grand Rounds" at the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a former participant in the Presidential Leadership Scholars (PLS) program, a highly selective leadership development program through four U.S. Presidential Libraries and Centers.

He received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) with Distinction in Research from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Simon Business School at the University of Rochester, where he was elected to the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. In addition, he holds his Master in Entrepreneurship and Innovation with Distinction from the University of Luxembourg as a Fulbright Scholar. He now represents the Fulbright Program as an Alumni Ambassador, having been selected among thousands of grantees by the Institute for International Education (IIE) and the U.S. Department of State. He was also appointed by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg’s Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs as a foreign trader advisor with jurisdiction over the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to advise on bilateral trade and economic development/business interests between the United States and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. His Bachelor of Arts (AB) in Economics is from Bowdoin College. He is currently earning his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in value-based health care from the University of Leiden in The Netherlands, which he is slated to complete in November 2023.

Milena McCartney

Milena McCartney is the co-founder and CEO of Ecurium LLC, a California-based consulting company, whose mission is to accelerate high-impact nonprofit organizations. Before starting Ecurium, Milena had 10+ years experience in both the nonprofit sector and management of healthcare organizations. She was an administrative director at the UCLA/CDU Cancer Center and  the Translational Science Institute at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine. 

Milena has secured and managed large scale grant funding exceeding $70M (USD) for cancer research from both Federal and State agencies including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the U.S. Department of Defence (DoD).

She has developed and implemented NIH-supported community outreach programs in patient navigation, clinical trials, and faculty career development. Milena has worked with leading medical centers such as Fred Hutch Cancer Center, Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, and others. 

Milena is frequently invited to review grant applications for Federal Agencies as well as the states of California and Illinois. She is an adviser at the Astia Fund, an angel investor group focused on supporting women-led initiatives. She holds Masters Degrees in Journalism from both Sofia University (Sofia, Bulgaria) and the University of Missouri (Columbia, MO) as well as a Masters Degree in Public Service/ Management of Nonprofit Organizations in Healthcare from DePaul University (Chicago, IL). She has also completed a leadership training program with the EU Commission in Brussels, Belgium.
