As BNP Paribas S.A. - Sofia Branch marks its 30th anniversary in Bulgaria, Agnieszka Pucilowska, General Manager of the branch for the past year, reflects on the bank's journey, its impact on the Bulgarian market, and its ongoing innovation in financial services. Her insights highlight BNP Paribas' milestones, its digital transformation efforts, and her personal connection to both the country and her leadership role.
Building a Legacy in Bulgaria
Since its establishment in 1994, BNP Paribas has made significant contributions to Bulgaria's financial sector. Early on, the bank played a key role in the privatization of electricity distribution companies, a pivotal moment in the country's modernization. BNP Paribas has also provided strategic financing for large-scale corporate projects, further solidifying its place as a trusted partner to the Bulgarian economy.
In recent years, BNP Paribas has supported Bulgaria's Ministry of Finance with its international Eurobond issuances. BNP Paribas S.A. - Sofia Branch, along with BNP Paribas Personal Finance S.A. Bulgaria, have been recognized as the Best Foreign Bank Branch in the country four times, a testament to the bank's long-standing commitment to the local market.
Embracing Digital Transformation
Agnieszka Pucilowska emphasizes that digital transformation has been a core focus for BNP Paribas in Bulgaria. The bank's Centric platform, launched in 2013, has grown into a comprehensive digital tool, providing corporate clients in 45 countries seamless access to online banking services. Another key innovation is the Welcome platform, a centralized document collecting tool for the whole BNP Paribas Group, of which the Sofia Branch was one of the earliest adopters worldwide.
For Agnieszka Pucilowska, digital innovation is about providing practical solutions that enhance customer experience, rather than adopting technology for its own sake. The Sofia Branch's early adoption of digital tools reflects the bank's commitment to staying ahead of industry trends and addressing real client needs.
Giving Back Through Corporate Social Responsibility
BNP Paribas is also dedicated to making a positive impact in Bulgaria through its corporate social responsibility initiatives. The bank supports programs like "DreamUp," which provides underprivileged children with access to artistic activities, and "Get Ready to Succeed," offering scholarships to talented students in difficult circumstances. These efforts, along with BNP Paribas' sponsorship of cultural events like the French Film Festival and the European Night of Museums and its environmental awareness campaigns, showcase the bank's commitment to giving back to the community.
Personal Reflections to Bulgaria
As a Polish national, Agnieszka Pucilowska feels a deep connection to Central and Eastern Europe, including Bulgaria. "I find in Bulgaria many features known to me from my childhood and youth: the post-communist heritage, the architecture, the small private shops, and above all, the sense of hospitality and community," she shares. What surprised her most, however, was the richness of Bulgarian history and culture. "This country is so little known, even in Europe! The ancient sites of Thracia and Serdika, the treasures of the past - there is so much to be proud of. Not to mention the beauty of nature, the quality of food, and the light here."
Agnieszka Pucilowska admits that Bulgaria has become her second home, one that she enjoys tremendously. Her personal connection to the country has deepened over her time as General Manager, making her role at BNP Paribas even more meaningful.
Leadership Philosophy
Agnieszka Pucilowska's leadership philosophy is grounded in authenticity and integrity. "I believe in leading by example and in the principle of 'walking your talk'," she explains. For her, empowering people is essential to motivating them. She is fortunate, she says, to lead a highly professional and dedicated team in Sofia.
Agnieszka Pucilowska values listening to diverse perspectives and is mindful of her own biases. However, she also encourages her team to step outside their comfort zones for growth. "Balancing between listening and pushing for progress is an important task for any leader," she notes. Her approach reflects a leadership style that fosters accountability, trust, and personal growth within the organization.
